I received this book to read and review as part of the 2020 BBNYA (Book Blogger Novel of the Year Award) and the BBNYA tours organised by @The_WriteReads Tour Team. All opinions are my own unbiased honest thoughts. More information about all can be found at the bottom of this post.
Marrow Charm is the first story in The Gate Cycle series, a Young Adult fantasy about a world decimated by magic. Azure Brimvine is one of those that has retreated underground to try and avoid the dangers of a magic borne plague of the Above. However the Below is also unsafe, as Azure finds out when her brother Armin becomes infected and is forced to the Above.
Wanting to be there for her brother, Azure, also know as Azzy decides she needs to find allies to help her navigate the monsters and humans of the broken above cities.
As I have a little bit more of Marrow Charm to read, I have chosen to not yet rate the title, but I will revisit this review when I have finished to give my final rating. However, I want to share my thoughts on the novel so far.
So far I have really enjoyed the atmosphere and world that the author has built, it feels well developed and unique. Additionally due to the magical disaster, the world is very dystopian in its existence, which I have always had a soft spot for. Also I enjoyed that the inclusion of magic that is actually used as a negative force rather than a positive or specialist force.
There were a few moments so far that I have found frustrating with one particular character – but I feel like all the characters all had a strong, independent personality. I know how I hope the story will end – but with a sequel, who knows where it will leave off.

TLDR? A dystopian fantasy world in which a sister wants to save her brother from a magical plague – so far an enjoyable read.
